Health risks (1998)

Currently smoking: Persons who responded that they currently smoke cigarettes on a regular basis.

Fried foods more than 2 times per week: Persons who responded that they eat fried foods more than 2 times per week on average.

More physically active than peers: Persons who responded that they consider they are more active than most (men/women) their age in terms of the amount of exercise, sports or other physical activities in which they participate.

Very stressful lives: Persons who responded that their daily life is very stressful.

Mostly or very satisfied with life: Persons who responded that, in general, they feel mostly satisfied or very satisfied in their lives.

Drink alcohol: Persons who responded that they drink alcohol.

Drink alcohol everyday: Persons who responded that they drink alcohol everyday.

Told overweight by doctor in the past year: Persons who responded that they had been told, in the past year, by a doctor or other health professional that they are overweight.

Access to health care (1998)

No insurance: Persons who responded that, when they go to the doctor or clinic, they use means other than health insurance to pay. Health insurance is defined as coverage by any type of private health insurance obtained through employment or purchased directly, or health insurance provided through publicly funded programs including Medicare, Medicaid, CHAMPUS/CHAMPVA, or other public hospital/physician programs.

Gone to doctor or clinic (past year): Persons who responded that, in the past year, they had gone to a doctor or clinic for an illness, health problem or a check-up.

Currently have family doctor: Persons who responded that they currently have a family doctor. Family doctor is defined as one particular doctor or clinic a person usually goes to if sick, needing a check-up or advice about their health.

Mental health services available: Persons who responded that they feel that mental health services like counseling and therapy are available to them in their community.

Screened or tested for in past year

High blood pressure: Persons who responded that, in the past year, they had been screened or tested for high blood pressure.

Skin cancer: Persons who responded that, in the past year, they had been screened or tested for skin cancer.

Colon cancer: Persons who responded that, in the past year, they had been screened or tested for colon cancer.

Breast cancer (female only): Persons who responded that, in the past year, they had been screened or tested for breast cancer (female only).

HIV/AIDS: Persons who responded that, in the past year, they had been screened or tested for HIV/AIDS.

Herpes: Persons who responded that, in the past year, they had been screened or tested for herpes.

Syphilis: Persons who responded that, in the past year, they had been screened or tested for syphilis.

Self-reported health status (1998)

Overall health (very good/excellent): Persons who responded that, considering their age, they described their overall physical health as very good or excellent.

Had a problem with (in past year)

Heart attack: Persons who responded that, in the past year, they had a problem with a heart attack.

Diabetes: Persons who responded that, in the past year, they had a problem with diabetes.

Cholesterol: Persons who responded that, in the past year, they had a problem with cholesterol.

Colon cancer: Persons who responded that, in the past year, they had a problem with colon cancer.

High blood pressure (except during pregnancy): Persons who responded that, in the past year, they had a problem with high blood pressure (except during pregnancy).

Breast cancer (female only): Persons who responded that, in the past year, they had a problem with breast cancer (female only).

Non-cancerous lumps in breast (female only): Persons who responded that, in the past year, they had a problem with non-cancerous lumps in breast (female only).

Cervical cancer (female only): Persons who responded that, in the past year, they had a problem with cervical cancer (female only).

Uterine cancer (female only): Persons who responded that, in the past year, they had a problem with uterine cancer (female only).

Ovarian cancer (female only): Persons who responded that, in the past year, they had a problem with ovarian cancer (female only).

Prostate cancer (male only): Persons who responded that, in the past year, they had a problem with prostate cancer (male only).

Any other cancer: Persons who responded that, in the past year, they had a problem with any other cancer.

Other illness: Persons who responded that, in the past year, they had a problem with any other illness.

Environmental health (1998)

Homes containing any asbestos products: Persons who responded that their home contains any asbestos products.

Lead exposure in the home: Persons who responded that they are exposed to lead in their home by water, paint, plumbing or some other source.

Residents reporting a problem with:

Mice or rats: Persons who responded that they have a problem in their home or neighborhood with mice or rats.

Insects: Persons who responded that they have a problem in their home or neighborhood with insects.

Roaches: Persons who responded that they have a problem in their home or neighborhood with roaches.

Other pests: Persons who responded that they have a problem in their home or neighborhood with other pests.
