Students receiving free & reduced lunch is an inexact measure of poverty. This is because there is no universally applied method for assuring that all eligible children receive the benefit nor that all children who receive the benefit are eligible. Nonetheless, school lunch data is considered the best measurement available to estimate the percent of low-income children in a school district.

District-wide School Performance Labels

What do School Peformance Labels mean? Schools are assigned Performance Labels based on an annual School Performance Score (SPS). The SPS reflects student-level LEAP 21/GEE 21 tests, Iowa Tests, attendance and dropout rates. Louisiana's goal is for all schools to have Performance Labels of Four Stars or higher (SPS of 120.0 or higher) by the year 2014.

Links for data for individual schools

The Lousiana Department of Education web site has a wealth of data available for individual schools. (Keep in mind that schools have attendance zones that don’t correspond with neighborhoods or Census tracts, and students don't always come from the neighborhood surrounding a school.)
